I keep seeing fic with words censored in the body of the fic like so: c*nt, f*gg*t, q-slur (seriously, come on), r*pe, *nc*st. I even saw a fic where someone was described as “sitting next to his unalived body” which was so absurd it made me laugh.
I’ve seen this trend in tags as well, which would be ACTIVELY FUCKING DANGEROUS if AO3 tag wranglers weren’t literal, actual angels who make sure that “rape” and “r*pe” (and all such transpositions) are treated like the same tag.
AO3 isn’t TikTok. Tag accurately and completely for your fic themes so people can search AND filter. Use the correct words in your fic content so people who use blacklist extensions can actually benefit from the tools that protect them.
If you don’t feel comfortable using a word without censoring it, then don’t use that word at all. Maybe consider why you’re even writing something that contains that theme.
Sincerely,
An actual real life rape and incest survivor who has actual fucking PTSD and really doesn’t want to have to stop reading fic for my ship because people think a god damn asterisk is going to somehow save people like me from being triggered.
I feel like maybe people newer to fandom don’t realize that putting asterisks in words like that is not to avoid triggering someone. Alternate words and alternate spellings are for tricking the algorithm from censoring/blocking your content from distribution (like on tiktok, not showing your video to anyone if you use the word “dead”, so you use the word “unalive”).
Tumblr and AO3 both don’t have that issue - your posts will still be seen if you use the full version of those words. And, as OP stated above, people rely on you using those words so that their blacklisted words/phrases work and they can actually avoid the things that trigger them.
The internet is vast and ever-changing and rules vary from site to site - this is good information for newer AO3/tumblr users!
I have no idea what’s going on
Congrats, we have reached a period of time where there is a generation that does not remember the first memes.
Look, i’ve been on tumblr for nine fucking years and I don’t get this meme. I remember seeing it at some point, but have no clue what it means.
because this meme is pre tumblr and pre-youtube and is about 17 years old, almost twice as long as you’ve been on tumblr
the ancient depths of albinoblacksheep will never die
But like, can someone explain. The fucking. Context.
It refers to a meme song, called The Badger Song or sometimes Badger Badger Badger, Mushroom, Mushroom. There is a snake in the lyrics also. You can watch the video on YouTube, if you so desire.
By way of further explanation, this comes from a time when most people had 56K modems or even slower, so downloading a full video clip of even crappy 320x240 resolution could take 5-10 minutes. You really had to want to see the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins or the Exploding Whale.
Flash bypassed this problem with cel animation. Each scene uses a static backdrop image plus small images of each of the moving parts, like pieces of a paper doll, which are then repositioned, scaled or flipped using a series of text commands written in a simple programming language. As the visual components were just a handful of static images, they didn’t have to be compressed as much as later Youtube video, making their edges as crisp as modern 4K. The most bandwidth-intensive aspect of Flash was the accompanying soundfile, but that loaded in a matter of seconds rather than minutes for video.
The result tended to look like a Monty Python animation, and so Flash yielded a bumper crop of the absurd from BadgerBadgerBadger to Pavoratti’s Elephants to Fight! Kikkoman, the soy sauce superhero. All of which only survive in imperfect, fuzzy YouTube captures.
I originally just put this in the tags, but I think it’s important enough to add to the actual post:
these flash animations aren’t just found in fuzzy youtube videos! you can see the original animations using BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint, a flash preservation project!
the software is free and open-source, and it has built-in players for flash and shockwave (as well as many other platforms). it allows you to search their archive of games and animations, and play them whenever you want!
they’ve got Badger Badger Badger, Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, Charlie the Unicorn, the original asdfmovie, and just…so many other animations and games that were thought to be lost or unplayable.
as of their most recent update, their archive has over 130,000 games and 20,000 animations, and most of them look just as crisp as they did 20 years ago.
so, go put Badger Badger Badger fullscreen and admire all of those sharp edges and clean lines! or play the Escape the Room series from 2keysgames, or the old Barbie games, or whatever you want! it’s an incredible resource, and I have spent hours getting lost in it.
It's been half a year since the lovely lovely @transandor made the nerf house for us to mess around in, and Goddess above where has the time gone?
NH has easily been one of the best things to happen to me in this weird and stressful year, and I couldn't be luckier—and I feel most of us agree with that sentiment. I've made more friends in these last few months than I have in years, had more motivation to work on creative projects than even longer then that. But more than than it really has just felt like I've found a family, a weird giant mess of a family, and I wouldn't change it for the world
As we head into a new year, as our interests change and we ourselves change, I hope that stays around. Who knows what we'll be talking about in six months or maybe a year from now, but I can't wait to be around for it!
And of course, a moment of appreciation for our lovely, wonderous fathers who have kept this whole thing running. We couldn't thank you enough for it all and—im sure I can speak for the entire Nerf House on this—we love you dearly
And so: to the lurkers, the regulars, and everyone who has graced this wonderful community
Happy Six Months of Nerf House! And everything that comes after!
Oh and, happy holidays folks Ɛ>

if my blog ever tags you in that ray ban sunglasses spam post PLEASE let me know, it means ive been hacked

Okay guys I’m just gonna say this, if you get mentioned in any of these Ray Ban charity event posts. DO NOT CLICK ON IT. It is a phishing website. DO not click on it unless you have the correct add blockers and safety precautions. I’ve gotten mentioned in at least 20 of these at this point, and a lot of them are from people I follow. That is because they have been hacked. They clicked on this link and their account was hacked. Please don’t click on this. I’m just bringing some more awareness to this.
